One of the main Sustainable Development Goals is SDG 9, a guide for industry, innovation, and infrastructure. It brings attention to the unfortunate reality: many of the items we currently own are not meant to be kept for a lifetime.
You can see it everywhere, from cell phones to couches, that products are designed with a limited lifespan. These items often damage or break down quickly, forcing us to replace them sooner than expected, which leads to a constant accumulation of waste. In fact, even items that appear sturdy are often designed to become unusable after a certain period. At REYNOARCH, we are of the simple belief that any product manufactured should be capable of serving its purpose for many, many years to come and should not be evaluated by its ability on the first day it is used, but rather on its ability throughout its entire lifespan.
It believes that products should be durable, reusable, and have a low impact on our environment through materials such as solid aluminum.
Why SDG 9 matters to us
This is not just big projects or industries. It's also about the things we use every day, the things we package, and the materials themselves.
That is why we try to do this; most of the damage to the environment is caused not by a single huge activity but from countless small, everyday instances of waste. The product was disposed of prematurely, the material was used only once before being thrown away, and the system was designed for replacement, not repair.
This goal challenges us to redefine the notion of "make." It moves the focus away from "what can be made rapidly" to "what can actually endure and be valuable beyond a single use."
What this means in real work
Changing the way we design. Take packaging as an example: it's thought of as a disposable thing that will shield and enhance the product before it is discarded. Most packaging is composed of mixed materials, is difficult to recycle, and has not been designed with the end-of-life phase in mind. With Reynoarch, we aim for an easier solution: use one material instead of several. That material should ideally be highly recyclable or even reusable. We try not to add any decorations; focus on function.
What SDG 9 does for the environment
This approach to design and manufacturing has a cumulative effect: less waste (we don't discard the entire product), reduced strain on raw materials (products can be repaired and reused over the long term), and lower energy consumption in reproducing the same items. This impact is not immediately apparent; it builds up gradually over time through small, everyday design decisions.
This approach to design and manufacturing methods builds up over time. This means waste is reduced (we do not just dispose of all the product), demand on raw materials is decreased (the products can be fixed and used for extended periods), and there is a reduction in energy required to reproduce identical products. This is not something that is obvious at the beginning of the product's lifecycle but develops over time through everyday design choices.
Reynoarch
Reynoarch is looking to simplify this idea: just because something can be built quickly doesn’t mean it should be built to disappear quickly. SDG 9 exists to keep that thought alive every time a design is drafted.
The responsibility, innovation, and forward-thinking are considered the foundations for sustainable development at Reynoarch, and our efforts towards SDG 9 intend to promote a sustainable construction industry, resilient infrastructures, and smart manufacturing for our next generations.
